Protect Your Computer For Free
At least this is how I have kept my computer safe from security threats and it has not cost me a dime nor have I had any problems.
I keep my windows updates on automatic to minimize the threat of security vulnerabilities inside of windows and office.
I am a bit dependent on windows yet, but if you are not you can use one of the many Linux based operating systems that are free such as Ubuntu which are said to be much more secure then windows operating systems.
I use the firewall built in to windows.
I use Firefox instead of IE. Firefox is more secure, easier on resources and has a huge directory of addons to customize the browsers features for your own use.
Avast anti virus is free and has proved itself worthy for my computer. I used AVG for years until the 8.0 update gave me problems with windows vista. This sent me on a search for a new antivirus and after trying several I choose Avast and completely love it.
Avast has protected my computer from spyware and malware but I know that is not the purpose of the program and I feel uneasy that it might not be enough. So I use Spyware terminator. Spyware Terminator is free and offers real time protection. Real time protection is rare with free spyware programs.
I felt this might be helpful to someone as I know my phone has been ringing off the hook by family and friends asking for help against a virus or threat. I have been virus free for 10 years and I get all these phone calls.. so I must be doing something right.
