Angels a to Z: James R Lewis: Books

ISBN: 1578590515
ISBN-13: 9781578590513

d20e820dd7a0fad4c292d010.L

Angels in various religions (Christianity, Islam, Hinduism) are treated, along with well-known angels, such as Michael and Gabriel, and obscure ones like Abdiel and Hadraniel. There is coverage of guardian angels and fallen angels and biblical figures associated with angels. Angels in art, architecture, film, TV, and music, as well as literature about angels, from Dante to today’s New Age writers, are also included. In addition to treating angels from the point of view of religion, they are also discussed in terms of the occult and metaphysics, with entries on UFOs, fairies, and witches. There are brief bibliographies at the end of entries, with sources ranging from The Encyclopedia of Religion to A Treatise on Angel Magic. The beautiful religious art featuring angels doesn’t reproduce too well in black and white. Appendixes include a classified bibliography, a filmography, and angel resources: organizations, publications, retail and mail-order companies, and Web pages. A detailed index includes illustrations as well as text.

The Magic Power of Witchcraft

Although the feel-good energy of the writing style often brings to mind a new-age self-help book from the mid eighties, this is a wonderful book for beginners. It’s not bad for more advanced practitioners to have on hand, either - both because of the real-world advice that is given (some of which no longer applies, some of which is more timely than ever). The Frost couple use Witch Power as a catch-all description for the art of winning friends and influencing people - much of the advice is applied psychology, rather than spells and incantations.

The God Code

Author and computer systems designer Gregg Braden wrapped this entire book around the premise that God’s name is literally encoded into every human body. According to Braden’s logic, the basic elements of DNA–hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and carbon–directly translate into specific letters of the Hebrew alphabets (YHVA), which then translate into the original name of God. Braden’s hope is that knowing that God’s signature is carried within each cell of the estimated six billion humans on earth will give humankind the evidence we need to overcome our differences and renew our faith:

Beyond Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Shinto, Native, Aboriginal, white, black, red, or yellow; man, woman, or child, the message reminds us that we are human. As humans, we share the same ancestors and exist as the children of the same Creator. In the moments that we doubt this one immutable truth, we need look no further than the cells of our body to be reminded. This is the power of the message within our cells.

One could argue that this melding of spirituality and science may be the next frontier in human evolution. Nonetheless, skeptics could also argue that this DNA=YHVA equation is an eerie coincidence, instead of a quantum breakthrough–like folding a $20 bill in a certain shape and seeing the twin towers in flames (Braden dispels such skepticism by asserting that the “odds that this relationship has occurred by chance are approximately 1 in 200,000″). This is neither a consistent or easy read. Some passages are filled with dense, analytical stretches of cross referencing ancient texts with modern science. Others are more prosaic as Braden explains his beautifully optimistic hope for peace on Earth. –Gail Hudson

Spiral Dance

The Spiral Dance is a complex myriad of thoughts, dreams, creation and spiritual exercises that can challenge even the most experienced magical practitioners. This is not a light’n'fluffy read, definitely not a basic introduction to witchcraft, wicca or paganism in any of its forms. For many years, this book was the only widely available text on the Great Goddess religion and, with two updates to the original work, remains relevant to this day. This book challenges the reader to take their spiritual path more seriously and can be a truly life-changing and mind-expanding experience. All readers will find exercises to suit them, as there are plenty to choose from. The feminist aspects teaches respect for the feminine to both men and women, being honest and confronting without going to excess. I’d recommend this to anyone seeking to find/understand themselves and their spiritual path, however this is not really a starting point but a way to expand your knowledge and practices. Beginners would be better off looking at Scott Cunningham and Jennifer Hunter first. Starhawk’s book goes into more depth on the Goddess aspect and on meditation and ritual, and it is useful to have a little grounding in the basics before moving into more complex intellectual and experiential territory. Fiona Horne’s books are also great basic guides, with extra information for those of us in the southern hemisphere.

Ask and It Is Given

For almost 20 years Jerry and Esther Hicks have been presenting workshops, producing tapes and writing books to help people create the life they desire. And desire is no small word in this agenda. According to the teachings of “Abraham”–a collective name for the spiritual entities that are channeled through Esther–desire is a good and natural force within us. In fact, we are all here to fulfill our desires, according to Abraham. Yet the reason so much of us feel frustrated, is that we have difficulty knowing how to ask and receive whatever we want to be, do or have.

Although Jerry and Esther are listed as the authors, Ask and It Is Given is actually a collection of channeled messages from Abraham. Fans of Abraham and the Hicks may not find new information, but will probably be delighted to have an inspiring, updated book that speaks to the familiar conversation of attracting the life we want. Newcomers may also be intrigued by this excellent, in-depth discussion on how to change one’s life by matching the vibrational energy of one’s desires–taking the power of positive thinking to a whole new level.

Because this material is channeled, it often reads like The Power of Now or A Course in Miracles–not a fast food book to be devoured in one sitting. Rather, this is a book to be read in passages, with a soothing gestation period in between. It includes much advice on working with energy and emotions as well as specific chapters on increasing prosperity, reclaiming health, working with meditation, and clearing clutter for clarity. For those who are onboard with the “Laws of Attraction” and the “Art of Receiving” that Abraham speaks of, this could be one of those deliciously mysterious books that you can open to any page and it seems to offer the exact advice or insight you need right now.–Gail Hudson
